General Information

Prerequisite: Math 122 or 131. This is a course in differential and integral calculus of several variables. The topics to be covered are from Chapters 12-16 of the textbook plus a few other topics: Vectors in the plane and space. Vector functions, derivatives, arc length, curvature. Functions of several variables: continuity, partial derivatives, chain rule, gradient, optimization, Lagrange multipliers. Double and triple integrals: change of variables, polar coordinates, cylindrical and spherical coordinates, surface area. Vector fields: gradient, curl, divergence, line and surface integrals, Green's, Stokes', and Divergence theorems.

There are three weekly lectures (MWF 11:00-11:50am) and one weekly lab session with the Teaching Assistant (Tue 11:00am - 12:15pm). All students are required to attend all sessions.

Course Grade

30% final exam, 40% best two out of three exams, 10% quizzes in TA section, 20% homework.

Final Exam

Tuesday, Dec 11, 2007, 8 AM - Noon, Location TBA.
Missing the final exam without prior notification to and approval of the instructor will automatically result in a grade of "F" for the semester.

Quizzes

There will be 10-minute quizzes given in the TA session. The problems on the quizzes will be similar to the examples given in class and to the homework problems. There will be NO make-up quizzes. At the end of the semester, the lowest quiz grade will be dropped and the rest will be averaged to make up 10% of your final grade.

Exams

Three exams will be given. The lowest grade will be dropped and each of the best two grades will count for 20% of your final grade. No make-up tests will be given without written excuses from your doctors or deans and the instructor's approval. Tentative Midterm dates are:

    Test 1: September 28, Friday
    Test 2: November 2, Friday
    Test 3: December 7, Friday

Homework

It's vital to do your homework timely. The homework is a course requirement and will help you to do well in the quizzes, exams and the final. All homework wll be collected at the beginning of the TA section. No homework will be accepted after the first 15 minutes of the section. Only selected homework problems (about 10 each week) will be graded. Each graded problem will be given a score of 0, 1 or 2.

The homework due at the TA section are from the sections covered in lecture during the previous week.
