Class/Lab meetings: Class meets MWF, 9:00-10:00AM. Lab meets Thursday, 11:00AM-12:15PM.
Office Hours: MWF 10:00 - 11:00 AM, or by appointment only (use email to set up appointments).

Designation as a Required or Elective course: Required.
Course description: This course is an introduction to Calculus, covering topics in functions; limits and derivatives; differentiation rules; applications of differentiation; and integration.
Prerequisites: high school algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
Text: James Stewart. Calculus, early transcendentals, 6th Edition.
Topics covered: most of chapters 1-6.

Functions: representing functions, mathematical models, exponential functions and logarithms.
Limits and Derivatives: limit of functions, tangents and velocity, and derivatives.
Differentiation rules: derivatives of polynomials and exponential functions, product and quotient rules, chain rule, implicit differentiation, and higher derivatives.
Applications of Differentiation: maximum and minimum values, L'Hospital's rule, and optimization problems.
Integrals: areas and distance, definite integrals, the fundamental theorem of calculus.
Applications of Integration: areas between curves, volumes and work.

Expected outcomes from undergraduate mathematics curriculum:

Students will be able to apply appropriate mathematical tools to problems
Students will be able to create mathematical models of real world problems
Students will be able to make precise mathematical definitions and statements
Students will be able to apply rigorous mathematical reasoning to prove theorems
Students will be able to apply statistical tools to analyze data
Students will be able to communicate mathematical ideas and results.

Relationship of course to ABET Program Outcomes: students will have the ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.

Grading: your grade will be based on the total sum of your scores on 2 mid-term tests, weekly quizzes, and the final.

Mid-terms: 20% each.
Quizzes: 20% in total.
Final: 40%.

Mid-terms: will be given during class time. Practice exams will be available on Monday of the exam weeks. Solutions will be available after the exams. Do check your Blackboard for these.

There will be no make-ups for missed mid-terms unless there is an extreme medical reason or you notify me well ahead of time with legitimate reasons.

Calculator policy: Programmable calculators are not allowed in midterm exams and the final. Calculators of models lower or equivalent to TI-84 are recommended. Quizzes: weekly quizzes will be given during your lab time. There will be no make-ups for missed quizzes.

Homework: will be given during class time, and are NOT to be handed in. You are strongly encouraged to do homework on a regular basis and to discuss the homework with your lab instructors.

Final exam: Tuesday, December 8, 2009, 8:00AM - Noon, in Newcomb B9.
